Julian John Smith, J.D. passed into eternity on January 28, 2018 in Gainesville. He was 96 and a resident of Gainesville, TX.
He was the son of John Francis and Grace Elizabeth (McCarville) Smith. He was born and lived his early life in the State of Wisconsin, and graduated from Mineral Point, Wisconsin high school in 1939. He received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Wisconsin in 1943 and served in the U.S. Army Infantry, for approximately three years (1943 – 1946) when he was honorably discharged. During his service, he was stationed at Camp Howze and while there met his wife, Kathryn Louise, (nee Stice), a native of Cooke County. They married May 29, 1947 and became the parents of Margaret Louise, Zinda Sue, John Julian, and Rebecca Kathryn. Margaret died in 2008.
Following his military service, he completed his formal education by graduating from Marquette University School of Law, Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1950 and was awarded a Doctor of Law Degree (J.D.). He was licensed to practice law in Wisconsin and Texas.
Julian’s career included eleven years as a Field Agent for the U.S. Department of Agriculture and approximately 22 years a s practicing attorney in Gainesville. He retired in 1989.
Following his first wife’s death in 1984, he married Kathryn (nee Aiken) in 1985. She also preceded him in 2010.
Julian took an interest in genealogy in his later years and corresponded with many of his relatives, as well as several life-long friends and acquaintances. With the internet as a resource, he was enabled to continue and expand his genealogical interests, at times corresponding with his many relatives world-wide.
Julian’s life philosophy was formed by his earlier experiences, including being raised in the Depression years of the 1930’s, and his life-time decisions tended toward trying to be of help to those he felt were less fortunate than he.
He was a life-time Roman Catholic and enjoyed dwelling on the many Truths, Mysteries, and Teachings of that faith, especially the Holy Mass, wherein the bread and wine, made by man, were mysteriously transfigured into the Real Body and Blood of Jesus Christ. Other favorite teachings were the forgiveness of sins and Everlasting Life. To him, there always seemed to be an answer to his prayers to God, whatever the need was. He valued his faith as a defining part of his life.
He leaves to cherish his memory daughters, Zinda Fuller, wife of Frank, of Dallas; Rebecca Bezner, wife of Dale, of Lindsay; and son John Julian Smith of Denver, CO; grandchildren Blake Bezner, Meredith Bezner, and Kathryn (Fuller) Castaneda and her husband, Gil. Other survivors include step-children and their respective spouses: Emily Muller, Melba LaBarbara, Lana Scully, Mickey Martin, and Tammy Adams; and many beloved step-grandchildren.
A Rosary will be recited at 4:00 PM on Tuesday, January 30, 2018 at Geo. J. Carroll & Son Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, January 31, 2018 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery.
