Born in Petrolia, Ontario, Canada to Richard Henry Bayly and Harriot Elizabeth Starritt. The family moved to Kansas and Richard Allyan married Sarah Elizabeth Beers on 28 September 1889. After having three children: Harry Edwin, 26 Dec 1890; Hazel, 27 May 1893; Boyd Allyan, 15 Nov 1895; they relocated to Colorado City (now known as Colorado Springs), Colorado. Sarah's parents were already in Colorado City. They settled in the gold mining area above Colorado City in the community of Goldfield, Colorado. This was part of the grouping of communities known at that time as the Cripple Creek district. As Hazel described in an interview, about 1986, "He never went into the mines; he worked in the samplers." She explained that the samplers were where the gold was separted from the other rock. In Colorado, they had three more children: Richard Henry (b. 20 Dec 1898 in Colorado City), Maitland Day (4 Jan 1901 in Goldfield), Georgia Elizabeth (b. 7 Nov 1904 in Loveland).

Richard's wife, Sarah, died 2 Aug 1907 resulting from a fall on the railroad tracks while she was pregnant with their seventh child. She is buried in the Evergreen Cemetery in Colorado Springs, south the downtown area. Sarah's mother, Susan and brother, George are also buried here. (All three are together).

The family was split for a while because Richard could not work and take care of six children. Harry was old enough to work and stayed in the Loveland area; Sarah's parents took the baby, Georgia to take care of; Boyd, Hazel, Richard, and Maitland were put in an orphanage in the Denver area. Richard soon reunited the family and moved them all back up to Loveland.

Here he married Alice M. Sibert 25 Nov 1908; moved the family back to the Goldfield and returned to work in the samplers. At some time after this, Richard and Alice moved to Coffeyville, Kansas, and later to Miami, Oklahoma. Richard and Alice had no known children, but Alice had a daughter who Richard helped to raise.

Harry, Richard and Sarah's oldest child was killed during WWI in Belgium, and is buried there.
