Coffin, Irene A. - (1888-1999) In Alameda, CA on Feb 28, 1999. Born in San Francisco and lived with parents in Mill Valley. She attended Girls High School in San Francisco, via a daily ferry commute from Marin County. High School graduation in 1906 was held in Golden Gate Park as the school building itself had been too badly damaged by the earthquake. She attended the University of CA in Berkeley and was graduated cum laude with the class of 1910. Following her graduation at U.C., Irene taught English, Dramatics & Literature at Berkeley High School for thirty-three years. To this day, she is remembered and admired by her many students. Her teaching career ended with her retirement in 1952, but that date also marked the beginning of the second half of her full life. Through the years she remained active at the University and was a member of the Prytanean Alumnae, Inc., California Alumni Assn., and was active Corresponding Secretary of the Class of 1910 from about 1930 through 1984. She wrote monthly for many years in the "Keeping in Touch" column of the California Monthly alumni magazine. One of her proudest occasions was the U.C. Charter Day ceremonies in 1982 when she led the traditional Parade of Classes into the Greek Theater as the eldest member. Never married, Irene is survived by a niece Mary L. Wolthuis of Oakland; a nephew Robert L. Coffin of Stinson Beach; and five grandnieces and nephews. Loving aunt of the late Bradford M. Coffin of Tomales, CA. Her family and friends will sorely miss her. A private memorial was held in her honor. Interment at Chapel of the Chimes, Oakland, CA.
