CALHOUN, Mr. Richard L. "Rick" Sr., 73, of Burkeville, Va., passed away on Tuesday, January 23, 2018. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, who raised him, Dr. and Mrs. A. L. Royse of Tacoma, Washington; and a stepson, Joseph Adkins. Rick is survived by a son, Richard L. Calhoun Jr. (Angie Mason); grandson, Apollo Harrison Calhoun, all of Crewe; stepdaughter, Stephanie McCraw (John) of Blackstone; stepgrandchildren, Hunter and Kayla McCraw and Raylan Adkins; sister, Vernette Lloyd-Hembd of Oregon; two nephews, Dalton and Braden Hembd. He was a U.S. Army veteran, a life member of the Nottoway County Emergency Squad, holding every office in the ranks to include Captain for several years and also Treasurer and Motor Lieutenant. Rick was also a former member of the Crewe Volunteer Fire Department, the Crewe Kiwanis Club and Scout Master of the Boy Scouts of America. He was a deacon and elder of Crewe Christian Church. Rick taught at Southside Training Skill Center in Crewe, the Amelia-Nottoway Vocational Tech School in Jetersville and the Prince Edward County High School Vo-Tech Center in Farmville. He was the former owner of Crewe Car Care Center and retired from Wilkerson Aircraft Tire Co. of Crewe. The family will receive friends 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, at the Joseph McMillian Funeral Home, 1826 Cox Rd. (Bus. Hwy. 460), near Blackstone. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, January 31, 2018, at the Virginia Veterans Cemetery, 10300 Pridesville Rd., Amelia, Va. 23002.
