Bernard Lee "Bernie" Stokes passed away peacefully Saturday, January 27, 2018 at Greenfield Senior Living of Strasburg in Strasburg, VA. He was 90 years old.

He met Sarah Jane Laughlin in Woodstock, VA and they married December 30, 1965 in Prince William County. They remained married for 49 years until she preceded him in death in July of 2015.

Bernard was born in Warren County, Virginia on August 23, 1927, the son of Alvin Bernard and Stella Sonner Stokes.

Though he lived elsewhere to complete his secondary education and to serve two years in the army, Bernard lived the remainder of his life in Front Royal, and was proud of this fact. He loved Warren County!

This love of his heritage and his community sparked a desire in him to become a public servant. Bernard served as a member of the Front Royal Town Council and the Warren County Board of Supervisors for nearly 30 years, and felt privileged to be a voice for all of his constituents.

Bernard was the member of many clubs and organizations throughout his lifetime, including the Moose, Elks, and American Legion Giles B Cook Post 53 in Front Royal.

He became a member of the Front Royal Rotary Club in 1972 and participated fully in club activities. He embodied the club's philosophy of service above self, always helping others as he was able. Bernard received the Paul Harris Fellow Award from the Front Royal club.

On February 19, 2006, Bernard received the key to Front Royal from the town of Front Royal and the Front Royal Chamber of Commerce. There was also a large gathering in his honor which recognized his dedication and loyalty to family and church; honesty and integrity displayed for 28 years of community service, having served 16 years on the Front Royal Town Council, two terms as vice mayor and 12 years on the Board of Supervisors; for mentoring fledgling businesses on Main Street; and his endearing humanitarian qualities, care and concern were exhibited as he lived and worked alongside colleagues and peers alike, as owner/manager of Stokes Mart on Main Street.

Bernard attended Bridgewater College in Bridgewater, VA for two years, then transferred to the University of Richmond, where he earned a degree in business. During these college days, he was known to make and sell sandwiches and coffee to students during their study breaks, thus honing his entrepreneurial skills.

Upon returning to Warren County, he began a long career in operating retail stores throughout the Shenandoah Valley. The last of the businesses he owned was Stokes Mart in Front Royal, which he sold in 2014, after approximately 40 years of operation.

Bernard is survived by his children, Andrew B. (Dee) Stokes of Front Royal VA, Jean Marie Stokes Gladden (Michael, deceased) of Red Lion, PA, Melisa Casacuberta of Fredericksburg, VA, Anita Casacuberta of Bentonville, VA, and Alicia Casacuberta Gutshall (Kevin) of Woodstock, VA.

He is also survived by five grandchildren, Jessica Mapes Junkins (Adam) of Gypsum, CO, Elizabeth French (Jonathan) of St. Louis, MO, Emily Gladden of Lewisberry, PA, Savannah Stokes Hughes (Jeff) of Richmond, VA and Kyle Gutshall, Woodstock, VA. Seven great grandchildren also survive him, Sierra Johns, Addison Junkins, Katie French, Gwenyth French, Claire French, Evelyn French, and Clayton Hughes.

Along with his parents and wife, Bernard was predeceased by his sister, Nancy Lowe and his brother-in-law, Kirkland J. "Kirk" Lowe.

He was previously married to Janet Minnie Rough of Evansville, Indiana from 1950 to 1965.

Family night will be held Wednesday, January 31, 2018 from 7:00-9:00 p.m. at Maddox Funeral Home in Front Royal, VA.

The funeral will be held at Front Royal United Methodist Church in Front Royal, VA on Thursday, February 1. 2018 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastors Terry Clark and Nathan Robinson officiating.
