Jerry Joe Whiteside Sr., 78, of South Haven, died Saturday, January 27, 2018 at the Sumner county Hospital in Caldwell.
Graveside Services will be held Friday, February 2, 2018 at 2 p.m. at the Potwin Cemetery in Potwin, Kans. Shelley Family Funeral Home 704 N. Washington Ave., Wellington is in charge of arrangements. Joe also known as “Potlicker” was born the son of John “Bud” and Violet Conquest (Flossie) Whiteside on October 26, 1939 at home in Potwin, KS. Joe attended school in Potwin and was a catcher for the baseball team. When he was a young boy, Joe was inducted into the Guinness Book of World Records for being the youngest butcher recorded at the age of 8. After graduating from Potwin High School he worked at the Potwin Locker and was later united in marriage with
Barbara Gulik on April 29, 1982.
In 1962, Joe served in the Army, on the 630th Military Police company during the Vietnam War. After he arrived home from his many adventures, he worked in Denver, Colorado cutting meat for Albertsons for the Meat Cutter’s Union. After some time he moved to Grand Island, Nebraska where he worked selling and servicing stock trailers for Hale Trailers, later becoming owner. He then moved on to Black Burn Construction in El Dorado, KS. Joe and his wife, Barbara, then bought and ran the Potwin Locker for many years, during which, Joe ran many hog feeds and mountain oyster feeds for the community. He then worked for Jay Hawk Pipeline, which he retired from at 60. After 2 years, Joe went back to work at the 7 Clans Casino working maintenance, where he worked for 12 years until retiring again.
Surviving to honor his memory are his daughters: Tammy Jo Brown of Wellington and Samantha Sue Stokes of El Dorado, KS, son, Jerry Joe Whiteside Jr. of South Haven, KS; stepdaughters: Cathy Nagy of Brighton, CO and Sue Jost of El Dorado, KS; 4 brothers: Lew Whiteside of Potwin, KS, Paul Whiteside of El Dorado, KS, Kenny Whiteside of Kentucky and Rodger Whiteside of Colorado; sister, Phyllis Olson of Chicago, IL; 4 grandchildren and5 great-grandchildren, 6 step grandchildren and 5 step- great-grandchildren.
Preceding him in death are his parents, loving wife Barbara Gulik Whiteside, 1 grandchild, Justin Wesley Whiteside, 2 step-grandchildren: Julia Pollock and Jody Nagy, sister, Virginia Price and a brother, Dale Whiteside.
