Jack Edwin Gentry Sr., age 78, passed away Monday, January 22, 2018 at his home in Sweeny, Texas.

Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, January 25, 2018 at Palms Funeral Home in Angleton, Texas. Interment will follow in the Sweeny City Cemetery under the direction of Palms Funeral Home of Angleton, Texas. The family will receive visitors from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 24, 2018, at Palms Funeral Home.

Jack was born September 12, 1939 in Bonita, Texas to Alvie Clyde Gentry and Minerva Ellen Selder Gentry. He attended school in Crowell, Texas before moving to Archer City where he finished high school. He married Vera Janell Rogers, the love of his life on September 12, 1964 in Archer City, Texas.

Jack went to Cisco Junior College on a football scholarship, to lose that in the first football season due to an injured knee. He then worked in the oil field as a roughneck, as a mechanic with his father, until he was drafted into the Army in the fall of 1961. Jack spent the next 23 years in the military, retiring in 1985 as a Master Sergeant. After retiring from the military, he went to work with Civil Service and retired after 20 years. He spent the rest of his years enjoying his family.

Jack will be greatly missed by his wife, Vera Janell; sons Carl of Sweeny and Jack Jr. and wife Denise of Angleton; three grandchildren Trey Gentry of Ft. Bliss, Hannah and husband Nick Guenot of Angleton, and Beau Gentry of Angleton; one great-grandson Jenson Guenot of Angleton; and many extended family members.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Lois Beesinger, Barbara Louise Gentry, and Billie Ruth Burks Devrow.

The family suggests memorials be made to the American Heart Association and the American Lung Association.
