Helen Canary Rowe
November 28, 1929 - January 25, 2018

Helen Canary Rowe, lifelong resident in Roanoke VA, passed away peacefully at home on January 25, 2018 surrounded by her loving husband and family. She was the daughter of the late Thomas W. Sr. and Helen Sterne Canary, and was born November 28, 1929. She married James Gilsenan Rowe on October 13, 1951 at Our Lady of Nazareth Catholic Church and celebrated their 66th anniversary there in October.

She graduated from Our Lady of Nazareth High School in 1947 where she was valedictorian of her class. After the children were raised she attended Virginia Western Community College and graduated with her Associates Degree in Mental Health.

She was the loving Mother of 8 children; James Gilsenan Jr. (Judy), Dorothy Helen Mertz ( Bob), Leonard Anthony, Mary Anna Davis ( Rich), Michael Charles Sr. ( Kathy), Patrick Thomas, Teresa Alice Bugas (Tim) , and Timothy John Sr. (Maureen) .

15 Grandchildren; Ben Davis, Jake ( Ericka) Davis, Abbey (Zack) Erwin, James Rowe III, Ashley Rowe, Patrick ( Emily) Rowe, Ryan (Melissa) Bugas, Kathleen (Todd) Harris, Thomas Rowe, Matt Bugas, Michael (Brittany) Rowe, Tim ( Jennifer) Rowe, Sean Bugas, Daniel Rowe, and Matthew Rowe.

5 Great-Grandchildren; Isaac Hernandez, Uriah Davis, Arthur Erwin, Virginia Harris and Clark Bugas.

She is also survived by sisters-in-law Rita Canary and Sue Rowe and brother-in-law Joe Rowe.

Helen was pre-deceased by a son Patrick Thomas in 1983, a son-in-law John M. White and daughter-in-law Linda Webb Rowe; and her sisters, infant Mary Helen, Sr. Dorothy Canary MMS, Mary Louise Black, Sr. Anna Marie Canary SCN, and her brother Thomas W. Canary Jr.

Helen loved to attend and sing at Mass, play bridge with several ladies’ groups, square dance with Jim and their friends in the “ Stardusters”, and teach and play Canasta with the children. She spent countless hours making “ picture pages” for the children and close friends. She looked forward to hosting family gatherings including the Turkey Bowl, Christmas Room, Easter Egg Hunt and parties for graduations, birthdays and family celebrations.

She loved the Mill Mountain Star, St Andrew’s Cathedral, Nativity Sets, beautiful Red cardinals, and a cup of coffee at 5 pm. She enjoyed weekends at Smith Mountain Lake where she and Jim and the family had many happy times on their Houseboat, the “ Roweboat”.

She was an active supporter of the Right to Life cause, and she and Jim were the primary advocates for the memorial to Unborn Children at St Andrew’s Cemetery. She was a lifetime member of the Catholic Daughters of America, member of the Women’s Guild and Bereavement Committee and retired from the Coast Guard Auxiliary at Smith Mt. Lake.

Helen was proud that all of the children graduated from Roanoke Catholic High School and attended college. She was a homemaker until the youngest entered grade school and then worked at Heironimus at Towers. She also volunteered with Youth Support Services and helped guide troubled teenagers and became the Executive Director of the organization and received a City of Roanoke Proclamation award presented by Mayor David Bowers. She volunteered for many years with Auction items for the Roanoke Catholic Carousel fundraiser and the Gold Rush committee.

The family thanks her doctors, nurses, physical therapists and friends from Meals on Wheels. We deeply appreciate the loving and dedicated caregivers who allowed Helen to be at home the last several years and showed her tremendous love, respect, consideration and gentleness, especially the last few weeks.
