Loving Husband and Father; 40 years with Guy F. Atkinson

Patrick O. Neal, known as "Pat," passed away on January 23 at the age of 86. Patrick was a resident of Foster City, California.

Pat grew up in Southern California and attended Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, where he graduated with a B.S. degree in Agricultural Engineering in 1957.

Pat met his wife, Delores "Dorie" (Rodgers) Neal (1932 – 2016) in San Luis Obispo and they were married in 1954.

He began working for Guy F. Atkinson upon graduation in 1957 in a career in construction that would span 40 years.

After an initial project for Atkinson, working on the Hetch Hetchy Reservoir in Yosemite, Pat began working in the company headquarters in South San Francisco where he spent the bulk of his career with Atkinson. Much of his work was in Purchasing, where he bought and leased heavy equipment for large projects in the Western U.S. and across the globe.

From the Atkinson web site: In many respects, the growth of Atkinson in this time parallels the growth of the Western United States. Atkinson grew with a succession of new projects, including contracts for hydroelectric work, irrigation and flood control, highways, bridges, tunnels, airports, utilities, industrial plants, and buildings.Starting in the early 1960s, Atkinson expanded its operations internationally… including Mangla Dam on the Jhelum River in Azad Kashmir, Pakistan – the 9th largest dam in the world.

Pat loved being outside in nature and taking in the massive scale of these projects. Family vacations included tours of West coast dams. Toward the end of his career, he accepted adventurous assignments on job sites in remote locations, living abroad with Dorie in Hudson Hope, British Columbia, Canada and Talca, Chile. Pat retired to his home in Foster City at 65.

Pat is survived by his two children, Mary Ann and Roger, and his two grandchildren. He will be greatly missed.

A celebration of Pat's life will be held at 11 am, Monday January 29, 2018 at Sneider & Sullivan & O'Connell's. In lieu of flowers the family encourages donations to Habitat for Humanity in his memory.
