Harold Roy Black, 91, was born at home in London, KY on January 11, 1927. Harold went home to be with Jesus on January 19, 2018. He was the only child of Harry and Stella Maples Black. After graduation from London High School, Mr. Black gained the rank of lieutenant in the United States Army. In the fall of 1947 he enrolled at the University of Kentucky, joined Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity, and earned a degree in Civil Engineering with an emphasis in Structures. He then worked full time in the bridge office of the Kentucky Department of Highways, while taking a full course load for a Master's Degree in Structures. In 1956 he founded the Dixie Bridge Company, specializing in bridges for highways, railroads and mining companies mainly in Kentucky, but in bordering states as well. In 1997 he received the Construction Management Founders Society's Lifetime Achievement Award presented by the University of Kentucky. Mr. Black enjoyed golfing and travel, especially if there was a horse trailer attached to his motor home. An avid lover and breeder of Quarter Horses, he was a very active member of the Elkhorn Saddle Club, the Indiana Trail Riders Association, and his horses were champions at both the World Show and Quarter Horse Congress.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sons, Frederick Carl Black and Bruce Harold Black, and daughter Cynthia Louise Black. He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Ida Wellwood Black of Bradenton, FL, daughter Bonnie Black Adams, grandchildren Rachel Allison Black, Heather Rose Black Adams and Joshawa Hunter Black Adams, Fred's beloved wife Sandra Suhren Hamblin and her children Pierce Walker Hamblin and Rebekah Suhren Hamblin.

Visitation Monday, January 22nd 5:00-7:00 pm, funeral Tuesday, January 23rd 11:00 am at Milward Funeral Directors, 391 Southland Drive Lexington, KY 40503. Service conducted by Noel White.

In lieu of flowers, donations can made to Re-Ride Quarter Horse Adoption Program, Inc., 12401 US Hwy 36 Marysville, OH 43040, Bluegrass Hospice Care, 2312 Alexandria Drive Lexington, KY 40504, or Thomson-Hood Veterans Center Family Fund, 100 Veterans Drive Wilmore, KY 40390, where Mr. Black spent the last three years of his life.
