Born in Southbridge, Massachusetts, Gertrude was the daughter of Aime J. LaRochelle and Eva St. Jean LaRochelle.

As the wife of Navy man, Salvino Paul Tobia who predeceased her, Gertrude lived in multiple places on the East Coast, always making a comfortable home for her family. She worked as an administrator in real estate and law enforcement, but her most important job was as mother of four children.
