Born in Southbridge, Massachusetts, Gertrude was the daughter of Aime J. LaRochelle and Eva St. Jean LaRochelle.
As the wife of Navy man, Salvino Paul Tobia who predeceased her, Gertrude lived in multiple places on the East Coast, always making a comfortable home for her family. She worked as an administrator in real estate and law enforcement, but her most important job was as mother of four children. She was an inspiring model for lifelong learning and a healthy lifestyle.
Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Peter Paul Tobia and Lisa Zollinger of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Steven J. Tobia and Lynn Tobia of Abingdon, Maryland; two daughters and a son-in-law, Susan Tobia of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Diane T. Baliker and Thomas P. Baliker of Greenville, South Carolina; one brother, Roland LaRochelle of Southbridge, Massachusetts; three sisters, Lorraine Healy of Rutland, Vermont, Dorothy DiGregorio of Charlton, Massachusetts, and Joan Corriveau of Greenwood, South Carolina; seven grandchildren, three great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
