Leonard was born June 3, 1928 at Rugby, ND to Baltzer and Regina Hilzendager. He graduated from Rugby High School in 1946. He earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering from State of Indiana. From 1953-1958 he worked for the State of California. He returned to North Dakota in 1961.
On January 2, 1961, he married Josephine Hauck at Assumption Abbey, Richardton, ND. He worked for the State of North Dakota until 1964. He moved with his family to Arizona and worked for the State of Arizona from 1964-1965. In 1965, he returned to the State of North Dakota to work in the Bridge Division up to his retirement in 1993.
Along with his career, he taught engineering classes at Bismarck State College from 1967-1990.
He was a member of Professional Engineers along with the Eagles Club, where he enjoyed dancing to old-time music, MolliB and Daniel O’Donnell being two of his favorite musicians. He enjoyed traveling, dancing, walking, was an active member of Corpus Christi, and was loved by many.
He is survived by his special friend, Sharon Phillips; his sister, Josephine Hagle; sister-in-law, Cleta Martin; aunt Bernice Hilzendager; and many nieces and nephews.
Leonard was preceded in death by his wife, Josephine; daughter, Jolynn King; brother, Edward; and his parents.
