Leo Marx

Leo A. Marx was descended from two of Detroit's oldest families, and he took his heritage seriously.

His father's family owned the downriver Marx Brewing Co. from the mid-19th Century until Prohibition. Mr. Marx, who died at 67 on Thanksgiving Day in Bon Secours Hospital, felt a special responsibility to the community because his roots went so deep, his son Owen said Friday. "He was proud of his family, and he gave generously of his time.
Leo Marx, Born in Wyandotte, Mr. Marx donated a historic house - the 1856 Armstrong House to the City of Wyandotte several years ago. It is maintained as a museum. MR. MARX, A RESIDENT of Grosse Pointe Park, was chairman and president of the Bush Manufacturing Co. of Troy, an automotive supply company. Earlier in his career he had been a vice-president with Indian Head Corp., a New York conglomerate, and a manufacturer's representative with the Detroit Engineering & Machine Co. Although he became a successful businessman, his son said he "was the greatest family man you can imagine. He liked his work, but business was never his No. 1 priority. He really devoted his life to his family," Owen Marx said. Mr. Marx was a member of the Board of Trustees of Bon Secours Hospital. He also belonged to the Country Club of Detroit, the Detroit Athletic Club, the Cardinal Club, the Renaissance Club, the Doe Lake Club and the International Fishing Club. HE IS SURVIVED by his wife, Anne; two sons, Leo A. Jr. and Owen; a daughter, Katherine Messacar; a sister, and six grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in St. Paul on the Lake Roman Catholic Church, 157 Lakeshore in Grosse Pointe Farms. Cremation will be at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Detroit. Tributes may be made to Bon Secours Hospital or the League of Catholic Women.
