ROCKVALE -- Marjorie Helan Steagall Fernandez, age 83 of Rockvale died Monday January 22nd, 2018 at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was born Sept 26, 1934 to Thomas and Alma Steagall in Rockvale, TN. She is survived by her children, Thomas & Kurt Fernandez, David Fernandez, Richard & Michele Fernandez, Kelly & Shawn Fernandez, Pam Maxwell Fernandez. Grandchildren, Ashley Fernandez, Anita (Josh) Fogleman, Brittany (Darren) Carr, Seth Fernandez, Micah Fernandez, Jonah Fernandez. Great Grandson, Daven Himes. Brother, Richard (Dick) & Debbie Steagall. Sisters, Beverly & Billy Burgess, Sandra & Joe James. She is preceded in death by her loving parents Thomas & Alma Steagall and husband Mauricio Fernandez.
Helan was a graduate of Rockvale High School and UT Knoxville with a degree in Sociology. She managed a home for unwed mothers and wayward girls after graduating college. She soon returned to Rockvale, her hometown, to become a mother of four sons. In the 70's, her and her husband Mauricio moved to Caracas Venezuela for work where they resided with their boys for five years. In 1975, they returned to Rockvale and purchased a farm from her father, Thomas R. Steagall, where she resided for the rest of her life.
From the day she was born, farm life was instilled in her and she hoped that one day she would own a farm to raise cattle, goats and other livestock. Her dreams came true in 1975 when her, Mauricio, and the boys moved back to Rockvale.
Mama was the matriarch of our family, always putting herself last. She was one of the most beloved and cherished people you will ever meet. She was well known in her community, she was always volunteering to help, baking pies for everyone, calling into WGNS to help others with their questions. She was known as a neighbor to everyone she ever met. She loved her family & friends, her garden, her farm, her flowers, and life altogether. She was a lifelong member of Rockvale Cumberland Presbyterian Church. We used to kid her about having her "Go Go" shoes on because if the church doors were open or a singing was going on, she was going to be there.
She will be missed by everyone that ever had the opportunity to meet her. The legacy that she leaves behind is one that will continue to impact other's lives. She had a genuine way of making you feel loved. Within her presence she would leave you feeling as though you had spent time with the Lord. She was a shining light, a true image of what God's love is like.
Although mama has gone to be with the Lord, her legacy will continue to live on through us all. She was so much more than words can describe. Mother. Friend. Neighbor. Mentor. Encourager. Teacher. Counselor. Our inspiration, our true saint.
