Helena (Lena) Jane Campbell, who I met many times as a youngster, was profoundly deaf, almost from birth, due to a severe case of measles, I believe. She communicated effectively with a combination of sounds and gestures, although she never learned formal sign language as far as I know. She did enjoy conversations with my Father when her family visited as both had picked up enough "sign language" to communicate.
