Katherine (Katie) Hammond, age 41, passed away on June 8th after a courageous and inspiring battle with breast cancer. Katie was born in Mobile on December 2, 1975 and graduated from UMS-Wrght in 1994. She attended The University of Alabama where she received a B.A. in Public Relations and was a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority. After graduating, Katie returned to Mobile where she worked at the Mobile Press Register and a PR firm before discovering her talent for broadcast journalism. She began her career at FOX10 where she stayed 5 years. In 2005, she joined WKRG where she served as a Producer and Assignment Editor until May 2016. She also produced special programs including Mardi Gras coverage, Iron Bowl specials and election results. While work was her passion, Katie also loved attending concerts, soaking up the sun at the beach, gardening at her home, spending time with friends and cheering on the Crimson Tide. Katie is survived by her loving parents, Warren and Carolyn Hammond of Mobile, her sister, Gwin Hammond of Denver, her uncle, Tom Gwin of Mobile, her aunt, Gene Ballard of Birmingham, several cousins and countless friends. A memorial service will be held at Dauphin Way United Methodist on Friday, June 16 at 12:00pm with a visitation immediately following at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Mobile Patriots Wheelchair Basketball Team, 4595 Hawthorne Place, Mobile, AL 36608 or the Mitchell Cancer Center.
