Born in Winchester, VA September 9, 1931 to John Henderson Farrar and Henrietta Page Farrar, John’s 2nd great grandfather was Capt. Richard King of the great King Ranch in Texas and his 9th great grandmother was Pocahontas. He had a passion for history, political science, science fiction, and music, and a deep devotion for his country, which was demonstrated by a long and distinguished scholastic, military and government service career.
Col. Farrar graduated from Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School in 1949, where he was on the varsity football squad. After high school, he attended the United States Military Academy at West Point, graduating in 1954. After West Point, he went on to serve a distinguished 30 year career as an Army officer. He attended and graduated from many military schools, to include the Basic & Advanced Infantry Officers course, Ranger and Airborne School, Jungle Warfare School in Panama, Pathfinder School at Fort Benning, the Army Language School (specializing in Russian), the US Army Institute for Advanced Soviet and East European Studies in Garmisch, the Army Command and Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, and the Army War College at Carlisle Barracks. John volunteered to serve two tours in Vietnam (1967-68 and 1971-72). He taught Russian at West Point as an Assistant Professor from 1968-71, and went on to serve on the International Military Staff at the NATO command in Brussels, Belgium. His last duty station was at Carlisle Barracks, where he was Professor of Soviet and East European Studies at the Army War College. He retired in August, 1984.
After retirement from the Army, Col. Farrar went to work at a “think tank” for the Israeli government on Soviet affairs in the Middle East. Afterwards, he returned to the US to serve in the Defense Intelligence Agency and then the Arms Control and Disarmament Agency at the State Department for an additional 20 years, serving as a consultant for an additional few years after retiring from the State Department. He spent the last years of his life enjoying retirement, traveling, and spending time with family and loved ones.
Funeral services will be held at Beth Sholom Congregation, 1011 N Market St, Frederick, MD 21701 on Sunday, January 28, at 11 am.
