Herbert Eugene Hurst, Jr. 83, of Cross City passed away January 20, 2018.

Mr. Hurst was born January 28, 1934 to the late Montie Bell and Herbert Hurst, Sr. in Hatchbend, but had spent most of his life in the Cross City area. He was a Veteran of the United States Marine Corp, serving during the Korean Conflict and retired, after 37 years, from the Florida Power Corporation. Mr. Hurst was a former Boy Scout Leader in High Springs, former member of both the Cross City Chamber of Commerce and the Cross City Rotary Club, and served as a Councilman for 33 years with the Town of Cross City. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Cross City. In his spare time, Mr. Hurst was an avid reader and loved to travel, particularly in his motor home and having been on forty cruises.

Mr. Hurst is survived by his wife of 45 years Dot Hurst, his son Lane Hurst, his daughters Melanie Lockhart, Jana Watson (Charlie), and Donna Forehand, his brothers Larry Hurst, Gary Hurst, and Patrick Bell, his sister Patricia Ergle, 13 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and other extended family members. He was preceded in death by his son Neil Hurst and his brother Ralph Bell.

Funeral services for Mr. Hurst will be held 11:00 AM Tuesday, January 23, 2018 in the Rick Gooding Funeral Home Cross City Chapel, with Pastor Mike Brown officiating. Interment will follow at Cross City Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.
