A message posted by Carolyn's father Frank; Rest In Peace my angel Carolyn...My dear sweet Carolyn has passed. She bravely fought depression for many years. So often, people would see a smiling young lady who was putting on a brave front because she did not want to be a burden to anyone. My little girl won countless battles with this insidious a disease. Sadly, on Thursday, she lost one battle and gave into the despair that she had so often triumphed over. She took her life while at school. I've also been told that teachers performed CPR until EMS arrived. The first responders restored her heart and breathing and she was flown to University Hospital. I can't begin to express my deepest gratitude to the students and staff at Devine ISD and to the first responders. Thank you so much for your efforts to save my little girl and all the kindness that has come our way since. I would also like to express my gratitude to the amazing staff at University Hospital. Their kindness and compassion exceeds anything I have ever experienced visiting a hospital. They are amazing people. Sadly, Carolyn's brain went too long without oxygen. The CT scan, MRI, and EEG all showed massive damage. Everything that was Carolyn's intellect and personality was gone. The best that could be expected was a permanent vegetative state. Nothing more than the brain stem was left. Carolyn loved helping others. She would grow her hair long and donate it so that cancer patients could have hair. She volunteered at the local food pantry. Recently she had begun volunteering at a sanctuary for abused animals. She was an amazing role model and mentor to her little brother. My daughter enriched my life and brought me more happiness than I could ever recount. A few years ago, she watched her uncle die from diabetes because he was unable to get an organ transplant. She spoke of how important it was to donate and help others. Given her expressed wishes, her mother and I decided to donate her organs so that other families may avoid the heartache that we have experienced this week. So we sat with her and waited. We could have removed her from the ventilator and once her heart stopped, she could give her kidneys, liver, and pancreas. Or...if we waited for her brain-stem to finish it's slow decline, she could be declared "brain dead". This would allow many other of her organs such as the heart, lungs, and so forth to be healthy enough for transplant. As painful as it was, Carolyn's mother and I knew that Carolyn would want to help as many people as possible. So we decided to wait with her. Finally, on Sunday the wait was over. She was pronounced dead at 3:37 P.M. Although my little girl is no longer with us, her legacy will live on in all lives that will benefit from her final gifts. My sorrow is indescribable. However, I was blessed with fifteen years with an amazingly intelligent, gifted, and loving daughter. My life has been enriched beyond description by the years she shared with me. Rest In Peace my little angel.
