Calvin Thomas "Tom" Carter went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Friday, January 19, 2018. He was born on January 5, 1928, the eldest son of Charles and Edith Welch Carter of Bedford, Va.

Tom was an outgoing kind hearted man who loved people and never met a stranger. He was well known and loved in our community. He was a devoted family man who adored his wife, children, grand children and great grand children. Throughout his life Tom loved to fish and to hunt. He also loved football and watching game shows with his sweetheart. Tom served his country during World War II in the United States Army where he was stationed in Seoul, South Korea with the 7th Infantry, Hourglass Division of Engineers. At age 19, he accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior during a revival meeting. He displayed a willing and positive attitude and put his whole heart into all that he did.

On August 27, 1952, he married the love of his life Evelyn Christine Powell of Asheville, N.C. They were married for 65 joyful years. Tom and Chris settled in Waynesboro when he was transferred from Roanoke, Va., by the Kroger company, whom he worked for 22 years as the Meat Department Manager. In the late 60's he joined the Blue Ridge Grocery Company as their Valley Meat Supervisor. In 1971, he opened the Broad Street IGA grocery store as a co-owner. In 1988, he opened and owned the West Main Street IGA grocery store.

He was preceded in death by sisters, Doris Corrida Carter, Pauline Piccino; son, Larry Ronald Carter; and a great-grandson, Cameron Allen Carter.

In addition to his wife, Evelyn Christine Powell Carter, he is survived by a sister, Alvie M. Brown; son, David Thomas Carter (wife, Yelena) and their children, Nathan and Jonathan; daughter, Sharon Lee Carter and her daughter, Chelsea Christine Carter (husband, Cody A. Carter) and their children, Ava Jane and Alana Grace.

The family will receive friends at McDow Funeral Home on Monday, January 22, 2018, from 5 to 7 p.m. A graveside service will be held at Augusta Memorial Park on Tuesday, January 23, 2018, at 1 p.m. officiated by Pastor Todd Brown.
