San Angelo

Jacqueline Marie Drake, 93, of San Angelo, passed away on Thursday, Jan. 18, 2018 in her favorite place, her home with a view of West Texas and its wildlife.

She was born on Nov. 10, 1924 in Ft. Worth, Texas to Truman and Maurine Carnes. She lived her early years in Texon, Texas, an infamous booming oilfield company town in West Texas. The family of seven moved to San Angelo, Texas, in 1932 where Jackie lived the remainder of her life. She graduated from San Angelo High School in 1942. While working at the ribbon counter at J.C.Penney's, she met the love of her life, Louis A. Drake, a "Yankee" who was stationed at Goodfellow Air Force Base, and they were later married May 10, 1945 in Ft. Meyers, Florida. They enjoyed many years of marriage until his death in 2003.

Jackie lived an incredibly full and active life. She enjoyed bowling in the Mop and Broom League, water skiing, night fishing with her girlfriends at Lake Nasworthy, swimming and chasing children at the Town and Country Club. She was involved in many community charitable activities through her Service Club. She and her husband Lou had many friends and were members of the Terpsichorian Dance Club and were founding members of the Hoolihan. They enjoyed rousing poker games with their many couple friends and family, Jackie usually coming out as the winner. She could always be found in the yard, doing what she enjoyed most, gardenning. Jackie and Lou traveled throughout the United States, Europe and enjoyed cruises. After her husband passed, she and her girlfiends enjoyed road trips together. Jackie was a can-do woman who served as a role model for many women through the years-there wasn't a job she wouldn't tackle. Her sense of adventure, humor, intelligence, style and grace were qualities admired by many, and she appreciated the close relationships with the children of the friends she had lost. Many complimented her youthful appearance and inquired about her secret to life. Her response was always "I married a good man and had 60 years with him." Mom, we will miss you and your beautiful smile.

Jackie is survived by her son, Richard Drake, of Meridian, grandson David Drake, wife Natalie and children Luke and Harper of Dallas, and grandson Damon Drake, wife Erica and daughter Reagan of San Antonio, and her daughter Debra Elder and husband Tim Elder of Leakey, and granddaughter Kate Latham of San Angelo along with many nieces, nephews and their families.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her brother Wallace Carnes, niece Monita Patterson and nephew Wallace Carnes, her brother Buddy Carnes and her sister Charlotte Sykes and nephew Alan Sykes. She was also preceded in death by her many long-time dear friends.

A private reception will be held for friends and family. A donation may be made to West Texas Boys Ranch or a charity of your choice in memory of this one of a kind woman. Family and friends are encouraged to share memories, send condolences and sign the online guestbook at johnsons-funeralhome.com. Arrangements are under the direction of Johnson's Funeral Home of San Angelo.
