He was an Instructor and Research Fellow in Anatomy at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City, 1948-1950.
Vernon then graduated from University of Nebrska College of Medicine cum Laude in 1954 and served his Residency in Interanl Medicine at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
He served in the United States Navy in San Francisco, California 1958-1960. After serving his country, Vernon contiuned in the Medical Field with a Fellowship in Neurophysiolgy, University of Oklahoma.
He returend to Nebraska and worked at Platte Valley Medical Group in Kearney, NE 1962-1967, and Department of Medicine University of Nebraska College of Medicine 1967-1969.
Dr. Ward then made a career in Private Practive at Clarkson Hosptial and also as an Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine in Omaha 1969-2005.
