US Congressman. He received a medical degree from Dartmouth College in 1814 and began practice as a physician, first in Bradford, Vermont, and later in Hanover, New Hampshire. He was a member of the New Hampshire House of Representatives from 1818 to 1820. In 1820 Whipple was elected to the US House of Representatives and served three terms, from 1821 to 1829. He then returned to the practice of medicine. According to Silas McKeen's history of Bradford, the 1823 death of Whipple's wife at age 39 caused him to begin drinking to excess, resulting in his early death from alcoholism and causing Vermont and New Hampshire residents of the Connecticut River valley to lament the loss of such an educated and talented individual.
