William enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in January of 1943. He flew 35 missions over war zones in Europe in a B24, serving as an aerial engineer and tail gunner. He was awarded 2 Distinguished Flying Cross Medals, as well as the Air Medal and Good Conduct Medal.
