Austin was age 5 in 1860 census for Phelps County, Missouri. He was born in Kentucky Hollow in Phelps County about 1855. He married Emily Armida Brown who was literate. She taught their children, three of whom became teachers in rural schools including their son, Robert Ray, who is buried at Big Piney Cemetery in nearby Pulaski County.

Austin was farming in 1910 census, but not enumerated in 1920. His wife, Emily, was listed as a widow in 1920 census. Austin's death is not in Missouri Death Records online--Missouri Digital Heritage. A descendant has sent for a death certificate to no avail.

A descendant said Austin was buried on the north side of Smith Cemetery; however, if the cemetery has expanded in that direction, Austin may no longer be on the north side.
