Chief Master Sergeant Lewis Franklin “Lew” Miller, a member of the Greatest Generation, died March 10, 2016, at age 91. Born Oct. 30, 1924, in Reno County, in a farmhouse without running water or electricity, the fifth son in a family of seven brothers and one sister, he attended Partridge HS, Kansas where he starred in basketball and mathematics. He joined the U.S. Army Signal Corps, and entered World War II at Cherbourg, France, shortly after D-Day. After the war, he joined the U.S. Air Force, and had a 22-year career with assignments at five air bases in this country and two abroad, and in the Korean and Cold Wars in Libya, Alaska, England, Japan, and Pakistan. He was a Master Mason, Shriner, and member of the Order of the Eastern Star. After retirement from the USAF, he moved with his family to Culver City, where he made a new career building aircraft for Douglas Aircraft Co. He lived for fifty years in the rolling hills of Juniper Flats, where he built three homes and tirelessly improved the natural landscape. He loved his wife, sons, landscaping, and his country. He leaves beloved wife Peggy; two sons, Lewis Jr. and Charles; and many friends. Previous wives Charlotte, (mother of Lewis Jr. and Charles), and Elaine are deceased. His six brothers and sister also preceded him in death. Services will be at 12 p.m. Wednesday, March 16, at Miller-Jones Mortuary and Crematory, Sun City. Interment at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 19, in Partridge Cemetery, Partridge. An Air Force color guard will render military honors at the interment. A reception for his wide circle of friends will be at the old Stagecoach House on Elton Lane at a date to be arranged. Visit www.hutchinsonfc.com to leave the family a personal message.
