Nicholas "N.A." Collins was born at "Plesant Hill," his father's plantation in Ridgeway, NC. He moved to the Big Sandy Mush area of Buncombe County when he was 4 years old, just after the Civil War. N.A. received his education at the Wayside School House and later attended a Peabody School taught by Mrs. Hupsell. He then studied under Professor Segalcon in West Asheville. N.A. Collins was elected to the police force in 1889 and became the police chief of Asheville from 1906-1909. He made a name for himself as a tough cop and savvy detective. Most notable was his work tracking down and apprehending Ben Foster and his heavily armed gang after the Emma Post Office robbery in 1901. In 1909 the city utilized a police commission to manage the department. N.A. left the department and was elected and served for several years as the county tax collector.

After leaving public office, N.A. Collins was the president of the Southern Highlands Reality Company. His business acumen did hot go unnoticed. He became the caretaker for many other properties and farms in West Asheville. The most notable was the historic Johnson farm.

N.A. considered traveling one of his favorite pastimes and even after reaching the age of 80 moved around the country extensively. Remarkably vigorous for his age, N.A. was an ardent hiker. He was often seen walking in all quarters of West Asheville. His love of walking no doubt started as a young man walking his patrol area. It was a life long passion. He was known to walk miles each day even in his 90's until a brief illness finally took his life. N.A. first voted in 1884 for Grover Cleveland and proudly voted as a Democrat in 18 presidential elections. He was a member of Trinity Methodist Church.
