Son of Dr. Mather Marvin and Matilda (Vreeland) Marvin. Graduated at Western Reserve College, Ohio 1842 and received D.D. from Dartmouth, 1876. Pastorates in Michigan and Medford, MA. Owned and edited the "Boston Recorder" from 1862 until it merged with the "Congregationalist". Purchased the "Boston Daily News" of which he was the editor and publisher until his death.

Married 22 April 1845 at Portage, Ohio to Elizabeth M. Burke. Two daughter: Martha Amelia and Mary Emma

Married 11 July 1854 at Charlestown, MA to Julia A. (Carleton) Farrar. Five children: Elizabeth Carleton, George Elihu, Lydia Carleton, William Mather, and Julia.
