NEWARK — Robert E. Glenn, 93, of Huntley, and longtime resident of Newark, passed away Tuesday evening, Jan. 16, at JourneyCare Hospice in Woodstock.

Mr. Glenn was born Sept. 11, 1924, in Mackinaw, Ill., the son of Robert I. and Thelma A. (Derry) Glenn. He married Jean Garrett-Glenn on April 7, 1946, in Lexington, Ill. Jean passed away Feb. 6, 1982. He remarried on Sept. 7, 1985, in Joliet, to Florine Anderson-Glenn. Florine passed away Feb. 8, 2011.

He was a life member of the Illinois Retired Teachers Association, National Education Association and the American Legion Post 459, AF&AM Comet Masonic Lodge 647, Illinois Valley, Bloomington, Kendall County Retired Teachers and Scottish Rites, Valley of Bloomington (32nd Degree Mason).

Mr. Glenn served with the U.S. Navy during WWII aboard the U.S. Destroyer Escort.

He attended four universities receiving B.S. and M.S. degrees from Illinois State University and an advanced graduate degree from Northern Illinois University and did graduate work at the University of Illinois, Urbana, and the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa. He also was certified with the Illinois assessing office.

Mr. Glenn was the superintendent of schools in Newark for 10 years, administrator at Joliet Junior Community College holding the positions of project co-ordinator to build the new campus, organizer and manager of the personnel office and retired as dean of personnel in 1983 after 15 years of service.

He was elected to the office of Big Grove Township Assessor in 1986, a position he held for 18 years. Mr. Glenn also was active in the community serving as a board member in the village of Newark, president of the Newark Sanitary District and was past commander of the Newark American Legion Post 459 and member of Millington United Methodist Church.

He is survived by a son, David E. (Joy) Glenn, of Woodstock, Ill.: a stepdaughter, Marie Blank, of Reno, Nev.; two stepsons, Glenn H. (Jacqueline) Selby, of Frankfort, Ill., and Thomas L. Selby, of New Lenox, Ill.; two grandsons, Jonathan Glenn and Joshua Glenn; three granddaughters, Jennifer McCord, Heather Goetz and Melissa Whitaker; many great-grandchildren and stepgrandchildren; a sister, Lois (Eugene) Murray, of Normal; a brother, Ralph Glenn, of Mattoon; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wives, Jean Glenn and Florine Glenn; a son, Gregory Glenn; a brother, John Glenn; a sister, Mary Quinton-Glenn; and a stepdaughter, Sharon Ann Selby.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 23, at Gabel-Dunn Funeral Home in Newark. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with Pastor Kirk Scott officiating. Interment will be in Millington-Newark Cemetery with military honors.
