John was a veteran of the United States Army where he served during the Vietnam war, after returning home he worked for many years as a coal miner. He was member of the UMWA. In spare time he was a very skilled woodworker, and loved being with friends and family.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his stepfather, David E. “Jack” Tolliver (1927-1992); two sisters, Phyllis Tilley-Decker (Deceased), and Patty K. Tilley-Puzak (Deceased); his niece, Tara Hedrick (Deceased); nephews, Timothy Brown (Deceased), Mark A. Puzak (Deceased), and Michael McKinney (Deceased).
Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife Helga Tilley; daughters Monica Tilley and her husband Danny Dowbridge of Clover SC, Stephanie Tilley-Biggs and her husband Jeffery Biggs of Monroe NC; grandsons, Joshua Biggs, Ethan Biggs, and Zachary Dowbridge; sisters, Margie Tilley-McKinney, Shelby Tilley-Paine and her husband Harold Paine, and Rose Tilley-Hedrick; brothers, Willie Tilley, and David Mathew Tolliver and wife Mandy Tolliver; very special friends, Roy Blankenship, Patricia King; nephew, John Brown; cousins, Ron Tolliver, Ted Trump, and David Bower; his faithful dog Emmy; and a host of nieces, nephews, and countless friends.
Visitation will be held on Friday, January 19, 2018 from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM at Evans-Calfee Funeral Service, 614 Appalachian Highway, Pineville, WV 24874, followed by a graveside service at 1:00 PM at Palm Memorial Gardens in Matheny, WV.
