Cheryl Annette Elkins Rogers, age 74, passed away January 16, 2018, at her home in Abilene, Texas.

A celebration of her life will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, January 19, at Southern Hills Church of Christ located at 3666 Buffalo Gap Road, Abilene. Visitation with the family will be at 3:00 p.m. at the church prior to the service. Burial will follow immediately at Elmwood Memorial Park at 5750 US Hwy 277 South under the direction of Elmwood Funeral Home.

Cheryl was born October 22, 1943, in Pasadena, California.

She was the second of the three children born to John Marion Elkins and Ruby Norene Houser Elkins.

She moved with her family to Abilene in 1957. She grew up in Abilene and was valedictorian of her class at Abilene Christian High School in 1961.

Always the diligent scholar and worker, she worked at various jobs all through high school and college. Her most rewarding early work was at the Herald of Truth headquarters at Highland Church of Christ, 1961-1964.

She graduated from Abilene Christian University in 1965 and immediately followed up her BS Ed with a MS Ed in 1966.

Cheryl married the love of her life, Don Charles Rogers, on June 5, 1964. They lived one year in Denver CO before returning to Abilene. They became the devoted parents of a son Scott Jeffrey and a daughter Christy Caron.

Cheryl taught in the Abilene ISD at Reagan Elementary and Adult Education. It was in the Adult Ed setting that she found her professional calling. She was recognized by the Texas Education Agency as GED Chief Examiner of the Year in 1997. She was ever the calm, compassionate teacher, mentor and friend.

Life in the Rogers family changed forever on December 21, 1998, when Christy was killed in a car crash on icy roads. Physical infirmities due to injuries in an auto accident in 1974 and grief for her daughter made Cheryl’s life challenging. She held on through all the struggles and proclaimed God’s goodness.
