He attended New Philadelphia High School until 1945 and graduated from Strasburg High School in 1946. In 1953, Dean graduated from Kent State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration. Dean was a Veteran of World War II, serving with U.S. occupation forces in Japan. Dean retired in 1986 from Empire Detroit Steel after 30 years of service as Personnel Director. In his free time, Dean enjoyed woodworking, operating his sawmill and hunting. He was a member of the First Christian Church in New Philadelphia.
Dean is survived by his daughter, Elizabeth Anne (Michael) Slater of Strasburg, son, James (Terri) Couts, also of Towanda; and grandchildren: Brian (Amy) Slater of Massillon and Michela Miller, Alex Couts, Mackenzie Miller, Mya Miller and Mitchel Miller all of Towanda.
Dean was preceded in death by his wife, Curtisa (Patterson) Couts; son, Adam Dean Couts who died in infancy in 1962; brother, Lloyd Couts who was killed while serving in World War II; and sisters: Pauline (Doyle) Merric of East Sparta, Ohio, Doris Couts of Walnut Creek, Ohio and Ruth (Bob) McVann of Kissimmee, Florida and Norman (Dora Lee) Couts of Strasburg, Ohio.
Pastor Jim Borton will lead a service celebrating Dean's life in the church's sanctuary on Saturday, Jan. 20th. at 11:00 a.m. in the First Christian Church at 104 3rd Street, New Philadelphia. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Burial Park at New Philadelphia. Calling hours will precede the service, beginning at 10:00 a.m. Following services, the family would like to invite guests to join them in the church fellowship hall where they will share in a time of food and fellowship. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests you take a break from you daily routine in Dean's name and spend a little extra time with those important to you, or make a charitable donation in Dean's name to Guthrie Hospice (421 Tomahawk Rd., Towanda, PA 18848). If you wish to send flowers, they maybe sent to the First Christian Church.
