Immediately after graduation from High School, James enlisted in the United States Air Corp as an Air Cadet. He atteneded flight school, earning his pilot wings, and at age 19 became a First Lieutenant, piloting the B-17 Flying Fortress in World War II in the 301st Bomb Group, 419 Squadron.
During World War II he flew 10 missions in Italy, Austria, Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia, North Africa and Iceland
