Robert E. Akers, Sr., 78, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away Monday, January 15, 2018, at ManorCare of Cedar Rapids.

Visitation: 10 – 11 a.m. Sunday, January 21, 2018, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids. Service: 11 a.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Inurnment will follow at the Linwood Cemetery Mausoleum, Cedar Rapids.

Robert was born April 6, 1939, in Alburnett, Iowa, the son of Leroy and Pauline Akers.

He served in the United States Air Force.

On November 26, 1960 Robert married the love of his life, Helen Pisarik.

He worked at Goss as a Machinist.

Robert was a member of the St. Mathew’s Catholic Church and the local machinist union. He enjoyed fishing and loved being involved with his grandchildren.

Robert is survived by his children, Ken (Amy) Akers of Ankeny, April (Drew) Tiedtke of Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, Bob Akers, Jr. of Fairfax, Richie (Heather) Akers of Cedar Rapids; nine grandchildren, Samantha, Bridget, Hank, Abigail, Noah, Simon, Payton, Harrison, and Zoey; Siblings, Ginnie Chappell of Olathe, Kansas, Phil (Judy) Akers of Council Bluffs, Tim (Florence) Akers of Lisbon; and Sister-in-law, Arlene Akers of Clarksville, Tennessee.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife of 56 years, Helen; daughter, Sandy; Grandson, Marvin Tiedtke; siblings, Sheryl Akers, Richard “Dick” Akers; brother-in-law, Dick Chappell; and niece, Mary Ann Petersen

Memorials may be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in memory of Sandy Akers.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at ManorCare, St. Lukes, and Northbrook.
