TO ANYONE RESEARCHING GEORGE APPLE:
I have reason to believe George's grave may have been misidentified as a veteran of the Mexican American war. The only documentation proving our George Apple was him, is the Ohio Grave Registration Card. There is another George W. Apple who was born in Ohio in 1828.
All public military information points to this other George W. Apple who moved into Kansas and is buried in Kansas. There was only one George Apple who served in the Mexican American war who came from Ohio, serving in Co F. 4th Reg. Ohio Infanty; the enlistment papers/official roster of Mexican War Soldiers has the enlistment date of May 24, 1847 @ 18 years of age. The Ohio Grave Registration has the same enlistment date, company and regiment, and a stamp saying it was from the Official Roster. The issue is our George would have been 19 years of age on the enlistment date and George W. Apple would have been 18 years of age. George W. also has a biography accurately accounting for his time in the war, as well as his headstone is inscribe with the company and regiment. Our George has no supporting documents linking him to the war apart from carrying a very similar name and passing away first, in Ohio, before the correct one did.
