Harry Turlington, 97, of Chesapeake, went to be with the Lord, surrounded by his loving family, Friday, January 12, 2018.

He was born in Harnett County, North Carolina and moved to Chesapeake at age 20. He was the son of the late Lee Jack and Vida Turlington, and was also predeceased by a son, Donald Ray Turlington, and a daughter, Sharon Turlington Beattie. He was a member of Unity Free Will Baptist Church, Chesapeake. Harry was a U.S. Navy Veteran of WWII, serving from 1941-1945. After the War, he worked for 25 years at Norfolk Southern Railroad, and 5 years for Norfolk Naval Shipyard. He was also a part-time farmer for over 30 years, and was never happier than when on his tractor, working the soil.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 73 years, Era Mae Turlington; six children, Bruce Turlington and wife Judy, Kay Moore and husband Garold, Betty Hargis and husband Kimball, Jeffrey Turlington, Lynn Clark and husband Barry, and Gayle Turlington Williams. He is also survived by eleven grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.

A graveside committal will be conducted at 12:30 p.m., Tuesday, January 16, 2018 in Riverside Memorial Park, Norfolk. A celebration of life will follow at 2:00 p.m., at Unity Freewill Baptist Church, 360 Hickory Road, East, Chesapeake. Pastor Earl Sutton will officiate. A reception will follow at the church.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Monday at Oman Funeral Home & Crematory, Chesapeake.
