Alberta L. "Barbara" Carter, 56, of 557 Paxton Ave., Chicago, Ill., formerly of Portsmouth, entered into eternal rest Jan. 29, 1998, in Greenbrier Valley Hospital, Ronceverte, W.Va. She was born in Southampton County, Va., and was a member of Antioch Baptist Church, Chicago.

Survivors include her husband, Wendell O. Christian; three daughters, Debbie Hines of New Jersey, Valerie Bates and Carolyn R. Carter, both of Chicago; her mother, Virginia P. Smith of Portsmouth; five sisters, Corine Whitehead of Massachusetts, Virginia Perry, Eunice Brooks, Vashti Williams and Cecilia Smith, all of Portsmouth; four brothers, Minister Robert L. Smith and Terrance Smith of Texas, Alonzo Smith of Colorado, and Wendell Smith of Portsmouth; five grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her father, Joseph Lee Smith, and two brothers, Melvin Smith and Joseph Smith Jr.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday in Noble Street Baptist Church, Portsmouth, by Minister Robert Lee Smith. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park, Chesapeake. Viewing at Corprew Funeral Home, Portsmouth, will begin at 1 p.m. today. The body will be taken to the church at 10 a.m. Thursday. The family will be at the home of her mother, Mrs. Virginia Smith, 169 Choate St., Portsmouth, and will assemble there for the procession to the church.
