Jeff entered the United States Navy on March 23, 1972. He served on the USS El Paso LKA 117 and on the submarine USS Daniel Webster during his service. Jeff received his honorable discharge on March 22, 1978, and returned to Anna.

While still in the service, Jeff was united in marriage to Trena Dillow on June 14, 1975 in Anna. The couple made their first home in Groton, Connecticut. They moved back to Anna, which is when their daughter Kimberly was born in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. A short time later, the family moved to Auburn, Nebraska in December of 1978. They were blessed with two more children while in Auburn, Sheryl and Andrew.

Upon moving to Auburn, Jeff began work at Cooper Nuclear Station near Brownville, Nebraska as a station operator. During his time at Cooper, he served as reactor operator, senior reactor operator, shift manager, and nuclear instructor. He retired in 2016 after 37 years, 7 months, and 7 days with the plant.
