Leester [prounounced Lee-Ester] was the daughter of Epperson F. "Ep" Joseph (Mar 1842-1911) and Mary Jane Green (Jul 1844-After 1920). Her parents called her Lester, all descendants call her Hester. She was born and raised on Long Creek of Licking River in Magoffin County. She married James Lee Allen on April 19, 1887 there; and they lived and raised a family on Long Creek. Sometime between July 1909 and April 1910 she, Lee, and the family moved to the head of Triplett Branch of Jones Fork near Betty in Knott County. Sometime before Lee died, in 1913 she and the kids (excluding Susie and Alex) moved back to Long Creek in Magoffin County, Alex joining them by 1916. They moved back (without the two eldest daughters) to Wayland in Floyd County, by June 1917, and were living (excluding Alex and Susie) at the Wayland Hotel, where Hester was employed as a maid by the Elkhorn Coal Corporation; this is why they are not found in the 1920 census. From about 1925 until 1931 she lived at Wayland with her son Alex, then with Alex's son Aaron, and finally her son Troy on Steels Creek near Wayland. She died on Steels Creek at Troy Allen's home of Heart Disease. She was a well-known and respected Wayland woman, resident of Wayland for thirty years, and a member of the Regular Baptist Church for half a century. Her funeral was held at the Steels Creek Regular Baptist Church near Wayland on October 14, 1947; officiating was the Revs. Hawk Moore, Willie Collins, E.H. and Bert Howard, Tom Mosely, and Malcolm C. Wright. She was survived by her children, three brothers: Bill and Silas Joseph of Wayland, Elijah Joseph of Magoffin County, and one sister, Cordelia Joseph of Wayland. She's buried in the Manns-Allen Cemetery on Steels Creek, next to her son, Alex, on right; and sister, Cordelia Joseph (Sep 1868-26 Apr 1958), on left. She was the mother of 7 children: Nora Lee Allen Bradley Joseph 1887-1962, Martha Jane Allen Wireman 1888-1954, Elliott Alexander "Alex" Allen 1892-1972, Eva Susannah "Susie" Allen Hicks 1894-1986, Bertha Allen Stumbo 1901-1983, Troy Allen 1903-1978, and Myrtle Allen Nickels 1905-1987.
