Master Sgt. Sean Thomas of Walker Township, PA., graduated from Hughesville High School in 1992 where he was actively involved in tennis, wrestling, soccer, and football. He also attended Penn State University, where he was a member of the Chi Phi Fraternity. His wife's family has deep roots in Centre County and Sean moved to the area when he attended Penn State. He studied English at University Park but he left before graduating to join the military full time, serving 14 years in all. He was last home in September 2006 for the birth of his daughter. He was just about to celebrate his first anniversary in April and had never been happier in his life. He was to attend officer's candidate school in October 2007 and was excited because he was down to four months to go and was going to be a warrant officer. He wanted to be a teacher when he returned to civilian life. Sean joined the Army Reserves as a senior in high school in 1992 and remained with the Reserves until 1998. He then joined and served with the Army National Guard 728th out of Lock Haven, PA which included an 8-month tour in Afghanistan where he was awarded the Bronze Star. He was currently deployed to Baghdad with the 28th Infantry DISCOM in Harrisburg, PA. Throughout his military career, Sean received various awards and was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart and the Combat Action Badge. He was 33.
