Mary Marie Hughes McNabb, 90, of Lowell passed away peacefully in her sleep at 4:00AM January 15, 2018. She was born January 9, 1928 to Mae Skidmore Hughes and Elmer John Hughes on the family farm behind Coal Run, Ohio.

Mary was a graduate of Beverly High School in 1945 and then went on to Beauty School.

Mary married Clifford Bert McNabb and together they had seven children. Freddy Gene (Anh) was born August 13, 1948. John Clifton (Sue) July 20, 1949. Chester Richard November 10, 1950. Rebecca Sue Grady (Jack) December 30, 1952. Thomas Dwight January 9, 1961. Marilyn Ruth September 27, 1963 and Jack Lyndon November 3, 1964.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, siblings Margaret Mincks, Ruth Pugh, Betty Schultheis, Dorothy Tice, Gerald Hughes and Robert Dean Hughes. Her husband Clifford, son John Clifton, and son-in-law Jack Grady.

Mary is survived by 15 grandchildren, over 40 great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by many very special nieces and nephews, and her church family of Coal Run and Lowell. She was a member of the Lowell Senior Citizens and the Lowell Pythian Sisters, #230.

Mary was an avid reader and often read a novel a day. She loved the farm life, flower gardening and had worn out many sewing machines in her lifetime making all of her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren quilts. She also loved to crochet Christmas ornaments and give them away to friends and family.

Mary’s favorite part of the farm house was her kitchen bar. As a family, it was the most important feature of the house. A place to gather not only for meals and discuss the farming plans of the day, but a place for problem solving, sharing of exciting news and sorrow. A place to knead bread, make noodles, and thousands of cookies and pies. It was a place to cut out quilt blocks, work puzzles, play cards and laugh. A place where you would find a pile of recipes, a book she couldn’t wait to start reading and her bible. A place where over a cup of coffee or a glass of ice water everyone was welcome and a precious soul touched the lives of so many.

Funeral services will be held 10:00 am Friday, January 19, 2018 at the Lowell Chapel of Cawley & Peoples Funeral Home, with Rich Lemal and Ron Laughery officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery. Mary’s family will greet friends on Thursday, from 4-8 pm at the funeral home, where Pythian Sisters services will be held at 7:30 pm.
