Mary Ellen Schulze passed away after a brief illness on Thursday, December 21, 2017. Services will begin at 11:00 am on Saturday, January 13, 2018 at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church with Rev. Stan Larson officiating.

Mary Ellen was born on October 27, 1925 in Sioux City, Iowa. She graduated from Central High School in Sioux City as Valedictorian in 1944 and from Carleton College in Northfield, MN, Summa Cum Laude in 1948. While at Carleton she met her husband of 67 years, John E. Schulze, Jr. and they married in December if 1948.

In 1950, John and Mary Ellen moved to Park Forest, Illinois where John was in the oil and chemical business. There, their children were born, John, III and Julie.

In 1965 John and Mary Ellen moved to Shreveport where they happily lived out the remainder of their lives.

Mary Ellen was a charter member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Park Forest, IL, a charter member of Nativity Lutheran Church in Shreveport and Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Shreveport. She served as organist in all three congregations for a combined total of over 40 years.

Mary Ellen was an avid golfer and member of East Ridge Country Club where at age 75 she won the Ladies Handicap Club Championship.

She was a member of PEO Chapter R and BAFTA (Be a Friend to All), an outreach ministry of the mental health organization for outpatients which she helped found and served for 50 years.

Mary Ellen was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, John E. Schulze, Jr.; her parents, Dr. Alvin and Esther Hendrickson; sister, Ruth Marie Jones; brother-in-law, F.F. Jones; and sister-in-law, Dolly Johanson.

She is survived by her son, John E. Schulze, III; daughter, Julie Schulze Cope (Larry); grandchildren, Jacob Schulze (Sarah), Nicholas Schulze, Jaime Updegraff (Dru), Jill Woodley (Justin) and Ellen Cope; and great grandchildren, Tallulah Schulze, Jackson, Hayden and Jill Updegraff and Clara and Esther Woodley.

She is also survived by her nieces, Mary Ellen Hartman, Leanne Kendrick and Linda Price; nephew, Tim Jones; cousin, Tom Jeffrey; brother-in-law, Vern Johanson; and numerous great nieces and nephews.
