PVT Thomas P.Carey

Enlisted September 1861 into Company B lst Delaware Regiment in Georgetown, Delaware along with his brothers: John,Robert and Woolsey Burton Carey to serve for 3 years.

The regiment was encamped and trained near Wilmington, Delaware and in October 1861 they recieved orders to move to Fort Monroe, Virginia for garrison duty.

In September 1862 the regiment was moved to Washington D.C. and was in the Battle of Antietam Maryland, the bloodiest one day battle in Civil War history.

In December 1862 the regiment engaged in the Battle of Fredericksburg, Virginia where Thomas was wounded.

On July 3 1863 the third and final day of the Battle of Gettysburg, the lst Delaware was in front of the center of Pickett's Charge. The regiment was placed behind a stone fence and Thomas was told by fellow comrades to keep his head down, which he did not, and was fatally shot in the head.

Thomas is buried in the National Cemetery at Gettysburg, Penna. by the Lincoln Memorial along with other Delaware soldiers who died during that battle.

His brother John Carey was with him at the Battle of Gettysburg and died at the Battle of the Wilderness.

His brother Woolsey Carey was wounded at the Battle of Fredericksburg, Va.
