The son of Joseph Oscar and Macie Mae (Darrell) Christian, he grew up in Mountain View, Carnegie, Bardley, and Lindsey. Mr. Christian moved to Boise City in 1950, where he worked in the broom corn and wheat harvests as well as various other farming jobs. He followed the wheat harvest in 1953 to Flagler, Colorado, where he became employed as a mechanic at the M & S Garage. It was then he met Marie Klusman, and on Sept. 26, 1954, the couple were married. The family moved to Optima in 1991, where he owned and operated Christian Salvage for several years.
He is preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Kenneth Don; 10 half-brothers; a half-sister, and a grandson.
Joe is survived by his wife of 52 years, Marie; five sons, Daniel Christian of Optima; Earnest Christian of Guymon; Gary Christian and wife, Agnes of Ness City, Kansas; and Scott Christian and wife, Heidi of Limon, Colorado; four daughters, Pam and husband Jim Kennedy of Lindsey, OK; Mary and husband, Terry Magner of Jackson, Wyoming; and Sheryl and husband Don Ashcraft of Guymon; two sisters, Fern Pilgrim of Bradley, Oklahoma and Sue Martinez of Guymon; a brother, James Christian and wife, LaVaun of Alex, Oklahoma; 18 grandchildren; 12 step-grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren, neices and nephews.
Memorial services will take place on Friday at 2 p.m. at the Bunch-Roberts Chapel with Rev. Mark Wescoatt, pastor of trinity Lutheran Church officiating. Interment of cremains will follow in the Elmhurst Cemetery.
The family will greet friends at 602 S. Main in Optima.
