Born on May 6, 1921, in Hartford, Connecticut, she was the daughter of the late Norman and Ruth Morrill. She was married for 61 years to the love of her life, Joseph B. McManus, who died on December 8, 2001.
Barbara grew up in West Hartford, CT and spent most of her first 85 years in the West Hartford area. She attended and graduated from local schools, and upon graduation she entered a career as a secretary, ultimately retiring from the AETNA Insurance Company as one of their executive secretaries.
At the age of 85, she left West Hartford and moved to Mayville, where she lived the remainder of her active, independent life in a home she had built to her specifications and in a community she came to love.
Barbara's fondest days were spent with her beloved Joe sailing on their boat, Rhubarb II, in the waters off Mystic, Connecticut. She enjoyed entertaining her friends and family and possessed a gift for storytelling that enthralled all who met her. Barbara also had a passion for gardening and from spring through fall, her home was filled with bouquets from her garden.
She had a special place in her heart and home for the many dogs she cared for over the years.
In addition to her parents and husband, Barbara was pre-deceased by a brother, Lee H. Morrill, and her step-father, William Ulrich.
She is survived by two nephews, William (Alice) Morrill of Sherman, NY and Jeffrey (Pegi) Morrill of Charleston, South Carolina; a niece, Janet (John) McClave of San Francisco, California; and numerous grand nephews and nieces.
At Barbara's request, there will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be held this summer at Cedar Hill Cemetery, Hartford, Connecticut, with burial to follow in her family plot. The family suggests that memorial donations be made to the Mayville Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 2, Mayville, NY 14757. The Freay Funeral Home, 139 S. Erie St., Mayville, NY has care of the arrangements.
