C. Earl Butts came to California in 1915 with his parents, uncle and family, and brothers. He went to school in Fresno, and when he was 15 enlisted and served with the U.S. Army, and thereafter, at the age of 16, enlisted with the U.S. Navy. He married at about 19 years to Fay Thomas of Fresno. The marriage ended in divorce by 1934 after the birth of son Chelsea Jr. in 1923 and daughter Colleen in 1933. In 1938 he married Edith Laine, and their daughter Cathy was born in 1950. He lived from 1960 to 1970 at Strawberry and Twin Bridges on Highway 50 between Placerville and Lake Tahoe. He died of pnumonia after cancer of the throat was in remission. He was cremated and his ashes placed near the family cabin close to Sierra Ski Ranch in El Dorado County.
