Robert Louis Lepre, age 92, formerly of Point Pleasant passed away on Wednesday, January 10, 2018, at The Chelsea in Brick.

Robert was born in Newark, NJ on July 21, 1925 to Louis and Elvia Lepre. With his parent’s permission, he enlisted in the United States Navy at the age of 17. Robert proudly served his Nation during World War II aboard the light cruiser USS Wilkes-Barre. Robert served from 1943 to 1946, participating in six major invasions, including Iwo Jima, Okinawa, Formosa, and Guadalcanal. Robert was also present during the signing of the Peace Treaty in Tokyo Bay.

Prior to his enlistment in the Navy, he met his future wife. Ann F. Fonzino came to New Jersey for what was supposed to be a brief visit from her native Pennsylvania. He asked her out on the day they met and, instead of returning home as planned, she moved in with her sister’s family so she could keep seeing him. They continued their courtship while he was serving in the Pacific through a daily exchange of letters, and married after the war in 1947. They lived primarily in Nutley, where they raised their three daughters.

A former parishioner of the Holy Family R.C. Church in Nutley, Robert was an active supporter of parish events. Until his retirement, Robert was a carpenter and construction contractor, building hundreds of homes in the Nutley and Belleville area. After his retirement in 1980, Robert and Ann relocated to the Jersey Shore where he spent his happiest hours remodeling their home, oil painting and fishing on the Point Pleasant Inlet. He was a lifelong sportsman who enjoyed fresh and salt water fishing and hunting in NJ, NY, PA, ME and Nova Scotia.

Robert is preceded in death by his wife, Ann Fonzino Lepre; by his brother
Gerald “Jerry” Lepre; and by his sisters, Christine Weber, Veronica Alvine and Roseline Renda. Robert is survived by his daughters, Cynthia Ann Lepre-Barnes and her husband John, Jane Napolitano, and Roberta Lepre; his brother Louis V. Lepre, his sisters Dorothy Serratelli and Judith Stampone, and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family will receive relatives and friends on Wednesday, January 17, 2018, from 4:00PM to 8:00PM at Colonial Funeral Home, 2170 Highway 88, Brick, NJ. A chapel service will take place on Thursday at 12:30 PM at the Brig. Gen. Wm. C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Wrightstown, NJ.

Friends wishing to honor Robert’s memory are requested to make contributions to Northern Ocean Habitat for Humanity, 1187 Washington Street, Suite 3, Toms River NJ 08753. Condolences can be sent to the family at www.colonialfuneralgroup.com.
