Ronnie Kay Bendheim

- - With deep sorrow but abiding love, gratitude and endless, joyful memories, we announce the passing of Ronnie Kay Bendheim.

Ronnie was born on July 19, 1920 in Brooklyn, NY, and died in Oakland, CA, on January 7, 2018. She was the daughter of Millard and Esther Newman, sister of Nan and brother of Millard Jr. (all deceased).

After high school at Woodmere Academy, Woodmere NY, Ronnie began university studies at Syracuse University before heading west to graduate from UCLA. She then joined the WAC's in WWII, served in El Paso - where she met her future husband Otto - and then in England during the blitz.

Ronnie and Otto were married in New York City in 1947. After they were married, Ronnie moved to Phoenix in 1948, where Otto was a practicing psychiatrist. Ronnie was one of the first physical therapists licensed in Arizona. She and Otto raised five children; Vicki (deceased, Don, deceased), Paul, Margo, Carolyn (deceased) and Fred. Ronnie excelled as a mother, potter, tennis player, bridge player, gardener, benefactor and friend to many people.

She and Otto traveled extensively, including Europe, Israel, South America and the Far East. She founded the Foundation to Support Molecular Virology at the Hebrew University, Jerusalem, and was an early activist for Planned Parenthood, ACLU and Head Start.

Her devoted husband Otto died in 2003. Ronnie moved to Oakland in 2013, where she lived next to her daughter Margo, son-in-law Paul Gregory and family.

Ronnie had a youthful, joie de vivre spirit that she manifested her entire life.

She is survived by daughter Margo (Paul Gregory), sons Paul (Judith) and Fred (Sarah), grandchildren Jane, Nathan (deceased), Jessica, Daniel and Gemma, great-grandchildren Opal and Audrey, nephews Paul (Flo) Eckstein, John (Diane) Eckstein, and Robert (Gwen) Newman, nieces Margaret Emory and Gail (Jeffrey, deceased) Kriss.

Services will be held on January 14, 11 AM at Sinai Mortuary, followed by interment at Beth El Cemetery.
