Please keep in mind about the many various ways when a name is written and spelled by someone other than the actual person that the name belongs to. A census taker, a county court clerk, a friend writing a will for a person, etc., are not always accurate because of phonetic spelling such as a record spelled :PHELPS" but the signature of the person will state FELPS . To find and know the exact and correct spelling of a persons name...research original and copied original documents that the person has actually signed. Deeds when conveyed to someone. A marriage certificate, and any document that requires a witness must be a handwritten signature and seal made in front of the clerk. The clerk can write out the document as however he wants. It will also require the persons mark if the person can not write his/her name.
