Mr. Reuben Chastain R.C. Oakley, Jr., 95 of Hampton entered into rest on Wednesday, January 10, 2018 at Piedmont Henry Hospital, Stockbridge.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 13, 2018 at 2 p.m. at Beulah Baptist Church with interment following in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends beginning at 1 p.m. until the hour of the service in the church sanctuary.
Mr. Oakley, son of the late Reuben C. and Edwina Travis Oakley, grew up in Birmingham, Al. where he graduated from Ensley High School. Shortly afterwards, he decided to move to Miami and made the trip on a bicycle from Birmingham to Miami within a week. He spent five years in the US Navy followed by 37 years in the US Navy Reserves, the first three of which he served during WWII on the famous Catalina aircraft flying boats on every major island chain in the Pacific except the Aleutians. Following WWII, he attended Embry Riddle Aeronautical University, received his A&E mechanic certification and was employed by Eastern Airlines from 1953 until 1980 when he retired. He was a member of Berea Christian Church and attended Morrow Christian Church. His first wife, Margaret Skipper Oakley, son, Tommy Oakley, step-son, Robert Darracott, grandsons, Kurt Oakley, and Jackson Moore preceded him in death.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara Rhodes Oakley; son, Ronald Travis Oakley and wife, Kathy of Yadkinville, N.C.; daughter-in-law, Sandra Oakley of Ballground; step-daughters, Suzanne Gatlin and husband, Randy of Griffin, and Dawn Moore of Macon; grandchildren, Konan Oakley and Kelle Diaddiggo, Jeffery Guynn, Joey Darracott, Steven Darracott, Parker Moore, Rachel Gatlin Estes, and Jay Gatlin.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Berea Christian Church, c/o Food Pantry, 37 Woolsey Rd., Hampton, Ga. 30228.
